Senator Gabriela Morris, the opposition spokesperson on youth and sports, has send commendations to the Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz on their opening of the nation’s 2023 Women’s World Cup football campaign
In a statement, Morris said the Reggae Girlz gave a spectacular performance in front of the home crowd at the National Stadium on Thursday (February 17), resulting in a 4-0 victory against Bermuda.
The match included two goals from captain Khadija Shaw and one each from Jody Brown and Trudi Carter in their CONCACAF Women’s World Cup qualifier at the National Stadium in Kingston.
“I am optimistic that this team, which is an excellent mix of youth and experience, will be a force to be reckoned with.”

According to Morris, the Reggae Girlz have started out their World Cup campaign in fine style.
“This feat has definitely lifted the morale of football fans. I believe that the ladies will continue to perform well as they did back in 2019 when they made history by qualifying for the World Cup,” Morris said.
“I am optimistic that this team, which is an excellent mix of youth and experience, will be a force to be reckoned with.”

While Morris said she remained optimistic about the prospects for victory, she took note of the need for additional support and implored Corporate Jamaica and the Diaspora to rally around the Reggae Girlz and support their journey.
Said Morris: “Over the years, women’s teams have struggled to garner the same support as their male counterparts. However, the time has come for us to give our Girlz the backing they deserve and need.”
Morris commended the Government heeding calls to allow vaccinated spectators for the match against Bermuda, a move she said was a step in the right direction.
She also added that she is looking forward to the roll out of a comprehensive plan from the sports ministry that will guide the recovery of the sporting industry.
