Anthony Smith, chief executive officer of Jamaican media giant RJR/Gleaner Communications Group, died earlier today (December 14).

At this time his cause of death remains unknown, although Our Today understands he was ailing for some time.

An engineer by training, he joined the group in 2022, heading up its print and digital division and two years later was promoted to the top job as group CEO.

Smith was leading the transformation of Jamaica’s largest media company as it looked to pivot to a more digital-centric approach and increase revenues and profits.

In order to effect a turnaround, Anthony Smith intended to preside over a three-pronged strategy:

1. Simplify the group’s structure

2. Diversify income

3. Embrace new technologies

“The financial results that we have produced in recent times is saying that we can’t continue at the edge. It is saying that we have to do fundamental changes.

“We’re going to follow our strategy and move the company in the right direction. We also recognise that the changes that we make must be measured. It must be structured, and it must also be quick,” said Smith last year.

RIP Anthony Smith, and condolences to the RJR/Gleaner Group.
