Member of Parliament for North East St Ann, Matthew Samuda, says that the necessary State resources are being deployed to the Walkerswood community, where three children died in a house fire on Sunday (January 12).

Samuda, speaking to media personnel alongside Moneague Division councillor Lloyd Garrick and St Ann’s Bay mayor Michael Belnavis, said that the deaths have hit the close-knit community hard.

While the blaze occurred in South East St Ann, one of the children attended school in the neighbouring constituency represented by Samuda.

WATCH:

Reports indicate that the pre-dawn fire sparked around 1:00 am in one of the rooms where three of four children slept.

An elderly woman, presumably their grandmother, and one of the children were rescued, as a passerby heard screams and went to their aid.

Two Jamaica Fire Brigade units and 19 firefighters responded to a 2:24 am call.

During the subsequent cooling-down operations, the charred remains of three children, two girls and a boy, were found.

The condition of the surviving child and grandmother is not known at this time.

Investigations are ongoing into the source of the blaze.
