Just days before kicking off the 2025 NFL season, the Seattle Seahawks made a major move to their offensive line, signing right tackle Abraham ‘Abe’ Lucas to a three-year extension worth US$46 million, with additional incentives that could push the total even higher.
Lucas, a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, was entering the final year of his rookie deal.
Now, instead of hitting free agency next offseason, he’s staying in Seattle right where the Seahawks want him. With new quarterback Sam Darnold set to make his Seahawks debut in Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers, the team is putting a premium on protection. And Lucas is expected to anchor that effort up front.
The 25-year-old started all 16 games as a rookie and looked like a long-term fixture on the line. However, injuries have limited him to just 13 games over the past two seasons. Still, Seattle is betting on his upside and believes he can return to form.
Locking in Lucas also sends a clear message: the Seahawks are committed to stability as they look to build off a solid but ultimately disappointing 10-7 campaign in 2024. Despite their winning record, Seattle missed the playoffs as all three NFC wild-card teams finished with at least 11 wins. They’re aiming higher this time around.
Adding to the good news, wide receiver Jake Bobo, who suffered a head injury in the preseason finale against the Packers, appears to have avoided anything serious and is on track to play in Week 1.
That gives Darnold a full arsenal of healthy weapons as he begins his next chapter in Seattle.
