Entertainment streaming giant Netflix continues to shore up anticipation for the fourth season of its popular regal series, The Crown, in its latest trailer showing tense conversations between the most powerful women in the 1980s.
The teaser trailer, released on Thursday (October 29), explores moments in Queen Elizabeth II’s long rule, at a time when uncertainty swirled around what direction the United Kingdom would take as a nation.
A steadfast and mature Queen Elizabeth (played by a sublime Olivia Colman) finds herself and the wider royal family preoccupied with safeguarding the monarchy’s line of succession.
You see, they were still no closer to securing an appropriate bride for Prince Charles, who, while boasting the title of the ‘world’s most eligible bachelor’, remained unmarried at 30.
The opening scene brilliantly places focus on Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (portrayed by Gillian Anderson) and the Queen’s first introduction. Shortly after exchanging pleasantries, boundaries seemed to be probed and explored.
“Your Majesty. I think we have enough respect for one another personally to ask ourselves some of the bigger questions, woman to woman. We are the same age after all,” Thatcher began.
“Really?” the queen replies, to which Thatcher adds, “Just six months between us.”
“Oh? And who is the senior?” Queen Elizabeth responds.
“I am, ma’am,” Thatcher says with unflinching confidence.
While Britain bids farewell to the 1970s, the nation begins to feel the impact of divisive policies introduced by Prime Minister Thatcher, tensions swell between her and Queen Elizabeth.
The growingly uncomfortable situation gets worse still as Thatcher leads the country into the Falklands War, generating conflict within the Commonwealth.
While the growing romance between Charles and young Lady Diana Spencer (done splendidly by Emma Corrin) provides a much-needed fairytale to unite the British people, behind closed doors, the royal family is becoming increasingly divided.
With season four roughly two weeks away, The Crown fans are brimming with excitement, and it’s not hard to see why.
The trailers tease just enough of the series; filled with striking imagery and raw emotive appeal, things are about to get dark.
