Shanieka Ricketts, Kirani James dominate at Croatia meet

Shanieka Ricketts and Kirani James turned in impressive performances at the Memorial Borisa Hanzekovia 2021 Meet in Zagreb, Croatia on Tuesday (September 14).

Ricketts, who finished in fourth place at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, set a new meet record of 14.77m to take the triple jump competition quite comfortably ahead of Nesa Filipic, whose best effort of 14.31m earned her second place.

Senni Salminen jumped 14.24m for third.

James, the Olympic 400m bronze medalist, ran a relaxed 44.46, a new meet record while finishing well clear of Isaac Makwala, who struggled down the stretch for 45.15. Italy’s Edoardo Scotti ran 45.30 for third.

Meanwhile, the USA’s Devon Allen continued to exact sweet revenge on Olympic medalists Ronald Levy and Hansle Parchment in the 110m hurdles. Having snatched the Diamond League title from Levy in Zurich last week even though they were both given the same time of 13.06, Allen was even better on Tuesday setting a new personal best of 12.99 to take the win.

Levy, the Olympic bronze medalist ran 13.11s for second place while Olympic champion Hansle Parchment had to settle for third having crossed the finish line in 13.12s.

Shericka Jackson is now 0-3 against Namibia’s Christine Mboma over the 200m. The 18-year-old Olympic silver medalist, as she is known to do, stormed past a tiring Jackson down the stretch to win in a new meet record of 22.04.

Jackson clocked 22.30s for second place while Athonique Strachan of the Bahamas finished third in 23.05s.

Janieve Russell ran 55.45s for third in the 400m hurdles race that Panama’s Gianna Woodruff won in 54.67s. Anna Ryzhykova was second in 54.87s.

Marvin Bracy had another impressive win in the 100m clocking 9.86s while pulling away from Ronnie Baker (9.97s) and Trayvon Bromell (10.03s). Julian Forte ran 10.20s for fifth.

Shadae Lawrence ended a season of growth as she finished third in the discus with a throw of 60.80m. Olympic champion, the USA’s Valarie Allman throw 69.63m for the win over Sandra Perkovic (66.48m).
