St Ann is widely recognised as one of the parishes with the highest longevity in Jamaica, with one of the country’s largest populations of centenarians.

This was celebrated in its second year; the St. Ann Custos Commando Initiative Centenarian Storytelling Series recently took place at the Bamboo Blu in Mammee Bay, St Ann.

According to Custos of St Ann, Joseph Issa, the initiative is held to preserve the rich history of Jamaica.

At the event, Centenarian and St Ann resident Neville Davis was awarded a plaque from Custos of St Ann, Joseph Issa, for being 100 years old.

Joseph Issa commented, “Our Jamaican history is rich and powerful, and our centenarians possess this rich history as they have lived it. As such, they are able to provide firsthand accounts of historical events, cultural traditions and social changes. In telling their stories, we benefit greatly.”

More than 50 people were in attendance at the event, including centenarians, their family members, caregivers, students, and community representatives. Aside from highlighting and showing appreciation for the centenarians, their caregivers and relatives, various groups and agencies who assist with elderly care and support were also acknowledged.
