Telecommunications Minister Daryl Vaz says that American satellite internet giant Starlink has reached out to the Government to provide wireless coverage in the fallout from Hurricane Melissa.

Vaz, addressing the nation at the special press briefing convened at the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (OPDEM) on Sunday (October 26), welcomed the move as an added measure to bolster Jamaica’s post-hurricane response.

“We can say that Starlink headquarters has reached out to us through their emergency response, and we have already gotten some equipment that is being used by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security to coordinate obviously, the preparations and the aftermath,” Vaz said during his brief announcement about the offer.

Starlink is owned by SpaceX, the American aerospace company founded by Elon Musk.
