Following an announcement by the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) that it will be delaying the start of its May-June examinations by three weeks, the National Secondary Students Council (NSSC) is welcoming CXC’s decision.

In an interview on Wednesday (April 27), NSSC President Jamaul Hall indicated that CXC’s decision to postpone their exams, came as a surprise to students as they did not expect the Council to heed the calls of stakeholders.

Nonetheless, he explained that while students are appreciative of the extended deadlines given for the submission of School-Based Assessments and the delay in the start of examinations, there is concern about when the release of results will take place.

Hall stated: “As concerned as students were about the exam they are now concerned about the matriculation period and the time which CXC will be taking to actually mark the papers and return the results.

“As you know we have students who plan to take up tertiary education internationally and they have concerns as to whether or not they will meet the deadlines by their tertiary institutions.”

The NSSC president noted that it would be in the best interest of students if CXC were to hire additional staff to aid in marking papers, so examination results could be released in good time.

Owing to the announced date changes for CXC examinations they will now commence on May 23 and end on July 1. Following this, results are expected to be released between late August and early September.
