Fontana Pharmacy brand ambassador Tami Chin Mitchell is encouraging Jamaicans to think beyond the Christmas season when supporting vulnerable young mothers, following a Wishing Tree handover at Mary’s Child in Papine.

The media personality, who has supported the home for several years, joined Fontana representatives during the gift distribution and also made a personal donation of J$150,000 to assist with the facility’s work.

“As a mother, this is a place I connect with very deeply,” Mitchell said. “Being a teenage mother is extremely difficult, and the support these young women receive here allows them to continue school while learning how to care for their babies.”

Mary’s Child provides residential care for teenage mothers and their babies, many of whom arrive through the Child Protection and Family Services Agency after being deemed in need of care and protection by the courts. The home also offers psychological and educational support to help young mothers rebuild their lives.

Mitchell said people often underestimate the value of small acts of giving.

“One tin of formula can feed a baby for a week. One outfit is something a child gets to wear,” she said. “Nothing is too small. Every mickle mek a muckle.”

She added that while Christmas is a natural time for generosity, support should not be limited to one season.

“We don’t wait until Christmas to give,” Mitchell said. “Support should happen throughout the year, whether it’s donations, supplies or simply showing up and letting people know they are seen.”

She also praised Fontana’s Wishing Tree initiative for allowing customers to play a direct role in supporting children’s homes across the island.

“Opening gifts on Christmas morning creates a sense of normalcy for the mothers and their babies,” she said. “It reminds them that they matter.”

Mitchell said she remains committed to continuing her involvement with Mary’s Child and similar causes.

“It’s no joke what they’re doing here,” she said. “I’ve seen young mothers return to school, move back into work and pursue higher education while raising their children. That’s something worth supporting.”
