Tanzid Hasan Tamim is not the first Bangladeshi batter to score a Test century in Australia as the visitors continued to pile on the pressure in Darwin.

The 25-year-old opener reached 101 from 197 balls in only his second Test, helping Bangladesh finish day two on 351-6 and take a commanding 153-run lead after Australia were bowled out for 198 on the opening day.

Tanzid resumed on 32 and quickly settled into his innings, putting together a 102-run partnership with Mominul Haque, who fell for 49 before lunch. He then added another 93 with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto as Australia struggled in the sweltering conditions at Marrara Oval.

His memorable innings eventually ended when he drove Nathan Lyon towards long off, where Mitchell Starc took the catch. Australia fought back after tea with three quick wickets, but Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Hasan Mahmud steadied Bangladesh with an unbeaten 43 run partnership before stumps.

Bangladesh now have a firm grip on the opening Test, although Australia’s impressive home record against them provides a reminder that the job is far from finished. Australia have never lost a Test to Bangladesh on home soil, making the visitors’ strong position after two days even more intriguing as the two Test series continues.
