In response to the widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, global technology brand TCL has donated 100 43” television sets to support recovery efforts in communities across Jamaica that were most severely impacted by the storm.

While televisions are often viewed primarily as entertainment devices, TCL emphasised that the units were selected for their collective and functional value within communal environments such as shelters, schools, and community centres.

In post-disaster settings, televisions play an important role in restoring access to information and emergency communications, supporting educational and community programming, and serving as shared resources that bring people together during the rebuilding process.

“Hurricane Melissa significantly disrupted daily life for thousands of Jamaicans, displacing families and impacting schools, shelters, and community spaces,” said Jane Cui, TCL Sales Manager Caribbean. “At TCL, we’re proud to stand with Jamaica during this critical recovery phase. This donation embodies our ‘Tech for Good’ commitment—using our products to address real community needs—and reaffirms our long-term bond with the Caribbean communities we serve.”

The gathering reflects a united effort between Courts, TCL and Food For The Poor to help families regain comfort and normalcy as rebuild and reroof projects continue across communities impacted by Hurricane Melissa.

Acknowledging that electricity restoration remains ongoing in some affected areas, TCL noted that the televisions are intended for use as infrastructure and essential services are progressively restored, ensuring long-term value and sustained impact for the communities served rather than immediate, short-term use.

The donation forms part of TCL’s ongoing commitment to the communities in which it operates and reflects the brand’s belief that, in moments of crisis, corporate entities have a responsibility to contribute in meaningful ways that support resilience, recovery, and access to essential resources. This particular donation is being facilitated with the support of Food For The Poor Jamaica, which continues to play a critical role in coordinating relief and recovery initiatives across the island.

“Recovery after a disaster is not only about rebuilding roofs and walls, but also restoring access to information, education, and shared community spaces,” said Marsha Burrell-Rose, Manager – Marketing, PR and Missions at Food For The Poor Jamaica. “This donation from TCL will help support schools, shelters, and community centres as they move from crisis response into long-term recovery, once they are in a position to receive and utilise these resources.”

The televisions will benefit communities located in the western parishes most heavily impacted by Hurricane Melissa, once conditions allow for their safe and effective use.

TCL extends its continued solidarity to the people of Jamaica and remains committed to contributing positively to the Caribbean region during times of need.
