At an age when most teenagers are still discovering their passions, rising producer Joel Engineer is making a statement in dancehall with the release of his latest project, the Unlocked Riddim, featuring two of the genre’s biggest names; Popcaan and Vybz Kartel.

The young producer, who is also the nephew of international dancehall star Popcaan, describes the opportunity as a major milestone in his growing career.

“It feels great to have produced a Vybz Kartel song. It’s even better to have Popcaan and Vybz Kartel on the same riddim,” said Joel. “I went to the same prep school as Kartel’s children while he was incarcerated, and I also have a surprise song coming with one of his sons.”

The Unlocked Riddim is expected to feature at least six songs, showcasing a range of sounds and perspectives while highlighting Joel’s evolving production style.

“I hope the fans appreciate the music and what I’ve been doing and growing into,” he shared. “I really want them to feel each song instead of just playing it.”

The project offers something for different segments of the dancehall audience. According to Joel, Vybz Kartel’s contribution delivers a vibrant summer-party energy, while Popcaan’s track leans into a more aggressive street sound.

With the inclusion of two of dancehall’s most influential voices, the Unlocked Riddim marks a significant achievement for the young producer, whose career continues to gain momentum. The project not only demonstrates his ability to attract top-tier talent but also signals the emergence of a new generation of producers ready to leave their mark on Jamaican music.
