Tottenham Hotspur have added another major signing to their summer rebuild, bringing in Portugal international Mateus Fernandes from West Ham in a deal worth up to £100 million.
The 21-year-old has not been confirmed on contract length, but arrives after two seasons in the Premier League split between Southampton and West Ham, both of which ended in relegation battles. He has one senior cap for Portugal but is not part of their World Cup squad.
Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi said Fernandes brings a mix of technical ability and intensity, adding that his comfort under pressure and ability to progress play made him an ideal fit for the squad. Tottenham saw off interest from Manchester United, who were unwilling to match the financial package, which is understood to be £85m upfront with add ons taking the total higher.
Fernandes had been a key target after Spurs failed with an approach for Sandro Tonali, before shifting focus and moving quickly to secure the Portuguese midfielder.
He becomes Tottenham’s fifth signing of the window, joining goalkeeper Martin Dubravka and defenders Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Jan Paul van Hecke as the club reshape their squad ahead of the new season.
