Toyota Motor Corporation has recently made a significant shift in its corporate policies, announcing it will no longer sponsor LGBTQ+ parades or enforce its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies.

This decision comes in the wake of growing online backlash and criticism from “anti-woke” advocates.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the automotive giant circulated a memo to its US employees, outlining its new direction. The memo highlighted that the company would now place a greater emphasis on initiatives aligned with STEM education and workforce readiness, moving away from its previous involvement in LGBTQ+ events and the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index.

This decision follows criticism from activist Robby Starbuck, who publicly condemned Toyota’s support for gender transition treatments for minors and the sponsorship of drag programmes for children. Starbuck’s opposition to what he refers to as “woke” corporate policies has gained traction, particularly among conservative groups pushing back against such corporate engagements.

Despite the policy change, Toyota has stressed that it will continue to promote an inclusive work environment. However, the focus of its efforts will now shift towards professional development, networking, and mentorship programmes that are in alignment with the company’s broader business goals.
