The Tourism Product Development Company Limited (TPDCo) and the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enrich the training and exposure of contestants in the Miss Jamaica Festival Queen Competition.
This significant partnership was formalized during a ceremony held at the TPDCo Boardroom on Thursday, May 30.
Lenford Salmon, executive director of JCDC, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “Today, we are not just signing a Memorandum of Understanding; we are forging a partnership that will enrich our communities and enhance the cultural fabric of our nation. The Jamaica Festival Queen Competition proudly stands as a beacon of cultural pride and excellence, showcasing the remarkable talents and achievements of Jamaican women from diverse backgrounds.”
Salmon highlighted the transformative journey contestants undertake each year, emphasizing that the competition is more than just preparation for a title.
“Through workshops, mentorship, and practical experiences, these young women evolve into articulate, poised, and knowledgeable ambassadors for Jamaica. This partnership will enrich our tourism landscape by integrating and promoting our rich cultural heritage,” he added.

Wade Mars, executive director of TPDCo, endorsed these sentiments, underscoring the strategic importance of the MOU.
“Our collaboration with JCDC is built on a shared vision of fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Jamaica’s tourism products and cultural assets. By formalizing this arrangement, we are setting the stage for a structured and effective framework to deliver comprehensive tourism product knowledge and soft skills training,” said Mars.
The MOU outlines several key objectives:
- Enhancing contestants’ knowledge and understanding of the tourism sector.
- Educating them about the history of tourism in Jamaica and visitor motivations.
- Fostering awareness of tourism’s importance to the national economy.
- Deepening their appreciation of Jamaican culture and heritage.
- Sensitizing participants to the importance of HIV/AIDS awareness within the tourism industry.
The agreement, effective immediately, will remain in force until May 29, 2026, with an option for renewal.
TPDCo will utilize its offices and training personnel across Jamaica’s seven destination areas to implement this training effectively.
Participants who complete the programme will receive certificates of participation, recognizing their achievement and readiness to represent Jamaica’s rich cultural heritage.
Mars concluded the ceremony with a note of gratitude and optimism: “As we move forward, let us remain committed to our shared goals and continue to work together to create a brighter future for Jamaica. Let us empower our young women, celebrate our culture, and enhance our tourism products. Thank you all for being here today.”
The MOU between TPDCo and JCDC marks a pivotal step in promoting cultural tourism in Jamaica, ensuring that the nation’s cultural ambassadors are well-equipped to shine both nationally and internationally.
