The government of Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) has confirmed the death of the Junior Minister in the Ministry of Education, Lisa Morris Julian, who tragically lost her life in a fire at her residence in Arima on Monday.
Reports indicate that two other lives were also claimed in the devastating blaze, including a six-year-old child.
The Government of T&T expressed profound sorrow over the loss of Morris Julian, describing her as “an unrelenting voice for her constituency and the government”. In a statement, the government extended heartfelt condolences to her family, loved ones, and the constituents of the D’Abadie/O’Meara constituency, which she represented.
Morris Julian, a former mayor of Arima, had been a dedicated member of the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM). She was elected as the parliamentary representative for D’Abadie/O’Meara in the 2020 general election and had been nominated unopposed as the PNM’s proposed candidate for the 2025 elections. “Lisa will be remembered fondly not only as an unrelenting voice for her constituency, the government, and the PNM but also for her love and support for her family and the countless lives she has touched,” the statement from the government read.
Prime Minister Rowley, along with several ministers, has travelled to Arima to offer their condolences to the grieving family. The tragic incident has ignited an outpouring of grief from across the nation, with many highlighting Morris Julian’s dedication to her community and her role as a public servant.
Barbadian Prime Minister, Mia Mottley wrote on her X, saying, “I’m deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of MP Lisa Morris-Julian and members of her family this morning in Trinidad & Tobago. On behalf of our nation, I send heartfelt prayers and condolences to the family, friends, Government and people of T&T during this tough time.”
Meanwhile, The Office of the Premier of Cayman Island expressed, “profound condolences to the Government and People of Trinidad and Tobago on the tragic passing of Minister Lisa Morris-Julian and her children.”
The fire, which occurred at her home in the Arima area, is still under investigation. Emergency services responded to the scene, but despite their efforts, the fire claimed the lives of Morris Julian, the child, and another unidentified individual. Authorities are working to determine the cause of the blaze and are expected to release further details in the coming days.
