A tropical storm warning has been activated for parts of the US Gulf Coast on Friday (June 18), ahead of the anticipated fallout from a low-pressure system that continues to strengthen.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the warning stretches from east of Morgan City, Louisiana to the Okaloosa/Walton County line in
Florida.

Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Maurepas, and Metropolitan New Orleans are also under the tropical storm warning.

The NHC, in an 11:00 am Central Daylight Time (CDT) bulletin, said that tropical depression three is slowly advancing towards the United States and could reach tropical storm strength as early as tonight before making landfall.

Meteorologists at the Florida-based NHC indicated that tropical depression three has a 90 per cent chance to further develop in the next 48 hours.

The centre of the system was located at latitude 26.5 North, longitude 91.1 West—or roughly 355 kilometres south of Morgan City, Louisiana.

“A slow northeastward motion across the southeastern United States is likely after landfall through the weekend. Some strengthening is forecast, and a subtropical or tropical storm is likely to form over the central or northern Gulf of Mexico later today,” the hurricane watchdog advised.

Maximum sustained winds are near 55 kilometres/hour, with higher gusts. Tropical depression three is moving north-northeasterly at around 22 kilometres/hour, the NHC added.

The system is not a threat to the western Caribbean, including Jamaica.

Claudette is the next available name on the 2021 North Atlantic Hurricane list.
