US President Donald Trump has said he “does not care” if Iran plays at this summer’s World Cup, as the Middle East remains embroiled in escalating conflict.

Israeli and American strikes over the past five days have prompted retaliatory attacks on US-allied states in the Gulf, casting doubt over Iran’s participation in the tournament cohosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico.

Iran has qualified for its fourth consecutive World Cup but could boycott the event. Trump described the country as “very badly defeated” and “running on fumes”, suggesting he is unconcerned about the potential withdrawal.

If Iran pulls out, Iraq and the UAE could step in, with Iraq needing a win in an intercontinental playoff against Bolivia or Suriname on March 31st in Monterrey, Mexico. The UAE would likely take Iran’s spot if Iraq qualifies or finishes next in line.

FIFA officials have acknowledged the possibility of withdrawal, with Iran scheduled to play New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles and Egypt in Seattle during the group stage. Under World Cup regulations, FIFA can replace any withdrawing team at its discretion, meaning another Asian nation could take Iran’s spot if necessary.

With less than 100 days until the expanded 48-team World Cup kicks off, uncertainty looms over whether the conflict between the US and Iran will affect the tournament. Trump is expected to remain a prominent figure throughout the event, continuing his high-profile role in global football after receiving the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize last December.
