Two Antiguans have been charged following Tuesday’s (March 28) boat tragedy that claimed the lives of 16 African migrants who were living in Antigua and Barbuda.
Antiguan law enforcement officials confirmed on Monday (April 3) that the Antiguans were charged with the suspicion of human smuggling.
The Antiguans were suspected to be the captain and crew member of the French vessel, La Belle Michelle II that was transporting 30 Africans that capsized 19 kilometres south of St Kitts’ Conaree Village, leaving Antigua some 65 miles (105 km) to the east.
The names of the accused have not yet been revealed by the police. Likewise, a court date has not yet been announced.
The Africans were living in Antigua for the past few months after arriving on a chartered flight.
According to recent reports, the Africans who were said to be from Cameroon were heading to the U.S. in seek of a better life due to an uptick in violence in their country.
