Amongst the new and upcoming talent in dancehall is Don Kahni. The deejay, who recently released his single, Whole Lotta Money, sat with Our Today to share parts of his journey about his music and his life.
The Kingston-born and raised artiste, when asked to use three words describe himself, chose creative, charismatic and alert, adding that he has a love for information and education. “I pay attention to everything in my space and I try to educate myself…doesn’t really matter what it is. I have a crave for information, for knowledge, at all times.”
The 30-year-old deejay describes his parents and friends as very supportive, detailing that his parents have never once discouraged from going into music.
Don Kahni whose real name is Rohan Edwards, expressed that his love and interest in music developed while he was in first form. He recalls recording his music on his laptop with the software Cool Edit Pro. Edwards, who creates his own lyrics, expressed that for him, most times he did not have to put pen to paper, but instead, relied on memory.
He drew inspiration from the likes of veterans Aidonia and Vybz Kartel. The musician shared that the thought of throwing in the towel has crossed his mind, however it was encouraging words from Govanna and Masicka that motivated him to continue on his journey.
Govana and Masicka, two of dancehall’s finest today, are friends that spoke words of encouragement to the upcoming artiste. “Those two guys in particular told me personally not to stop, because we were all trying at the same,” Kahni told Our Today.
Like with many of his previous songs, Kahni said that when putting together his new single, Whole Lotta Money, he was not in need of a pen and paper. Recording the entire song in only an hour, the deejay said that because money is a phenomenon that is always on the forefront of his mind, putting the song together did not pose a challenge.
He remembers being in studio and after hearing the beat, he created the chorus on the spot, adding that once the chorus is completed what follows, comes easily.

Unlike the recording of the song, the making of the video proved to be a bit challenging as unexpected events occurred throughout the day. But despite the issues Don Kahni and his team faced, they were still able to meet their goal.
The music video, produced by Knacks Productions, sees Kahni as the lyrics dictate, with a whole lotta money. Dressed in a polo bucket hat, ripped black jeans, unbuttoned jacket, in some scenes, Kahni’s female interest can be seen dancing around the star.
When asked about the future, the musician shared that his intention is continue making music, “I see myself making more music and being a household name,” he continued, expressing the want to crossover into other genres such as pop and hip hop.
Before wrapping, the DJ revealed that he will be releasing his EP in 2022, however, he remained tight-lipped over further deatils.
