American carrier JetBlue Airline says it has launched an investigation into the actions of flight attendant Kalina Collier and whether disciplinary measures will be taken after a controversial incident in Jamaica over the weekend.

Responding to NBC News, JetBlue spokesperson Derek Dombrowski said the airline is probing reports into Collier, who accused the Jamaican Government of holding her against her will.

“We have full confidence in Jamaica’s health protocols and it is important everyone follows the rules,” Dombrowski said in a statement Monday (February 15).

“We hold each JetBlue crewmember to the highest standards when it comes to personal integrity and we are conducting an urgent investigation into the actions of our crewmember,” he added.

In the report, NBC News said it reached out to the 22-year-old Collier but she reportedly “did not immediately return a request for an interview”.

Collier, according to a statement by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and was nearly complete with a mandatory 14-day quarantine at the Ocean Coral Spring Resort in Trelawny.

While an exact timeline has not been established, Collier made a series of Instagram Live streams about being mistreated, being held against her will and fearing she would be kidnapped or abducted and sold into sex trafficking.

The videos garnered thousands of views before being deleted, by which time hundreds of social media users, including US activists, pleaded for authorities to assist the distressed American.

Several investigations later, the JCF concluded that the rumours circulating about the wellbeing of Collier were false.

“The Police are advising members of the public to dismiss as rumour information that has been circulated via social and other media that American National Kalina Collier was kidnapped in Jamaica,” the JCF indicated.

“The police assert the information is baseless and mischievous. On arrival in Jamaica, Collier was tested positive for the COVID-19 virus [and] was placed in isolation. This is in keeping with Jamaica’s COVID-prevention protocols as stipulated by the Ministry of Health and Wellness,” the police tweeted on Sunday (February 14).

Collier was cleared to leave around 1:30 pm and left for the Donald Sangster Airport with her mother.
