Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (TTEC), the sole power transmission and distribution company in the twin-island republic, says it has commenced restoration processes for thousands of affected customers currently in the dark after a major, “unknown” disruption on Wednesday (February 16).

TTEC, in an update via Facebook, indicated that it made contact with independent power producers (IPPs), who have manually restarted their generators to facilitate the gradual resumption of service.

The energy company was mum, however, on the probable cause of the widespread outage—the extent of which is difficult to ascertain due to the electricity unavailability’s resulting impact on internet connectivity.

The utility provider was also unable to give a definitive timeline on power restoration.

“The Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are currently restarting the generators to allow a gradual restoration of supply. This process will take approximately 2-3 hours. Our 800 numbers are currently down, however, customers can contact the Call Center at 794-4823 or 794-7264. Please note due to high call volumes you will experience some delays. We once again apologise for the inconvenience,” TTEC disclosed.

Stay tuned for further updates.
