The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has proposed new restrictions on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), aiming to limit the purchase of unhealthy foods with federal benefits.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, working alongside Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, announced the plan to prioritize healthier food choices within SNAP. Rollins highlighted concerns about taxpayer dollars funding unhealthy food purchases, pointing to a significant programme expansion under the Biden administration. While ensuring that no child would go hungry, she noted the importance of promoting better nutrition among low-income families.

The proposal has ignited a strong response on social media. Many users support the idea of healthier food choices but argue that the high cost of nutritious options must be addressed. One commenter wrote, “I get it. I do. But I hope they lower the cost of fruits and vegetables because those are more expensive than junk food.” Another Instagram user added, “Does this mean you gonna raise the monthly payment? Because eating healthy isn’t cheap.” Others echoed similar sentiments, with one stating, “So, make healthy foods affordable then.”

While the USDA has yet to release specific details on what items would be restricted under the new plan, the announcement has fueled concern about food accessibility, affordability, and government assistance programs.

The proposal remains under review, with further discussions expected before any policy changes occur.
