USF restoring 419 internet sites

The Universal Service Fund (USF), through its ‘Connec’2Recovery’ programme, continues to drive restoration of public internet infrastructure damaged during the hurricane.

The initiative targets the recovery of 419 public connectivity sites islandwide, including community and public Wi-Fi sites.

“So far, out of a total of $863 million, $443 million has already been committed, and the procurement activity remains active. Completion is on track for March 31, 2026,” said Minister of Energy, Transport and Telecommunications Daryl Vaz, at a recent post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House.

Turning to telecoms, Minister Vaz informed that Flow mobile service restoration has reached approximately 96 per cent of sites islandwide, while fixed network infrastructure is approximately 94 per cent.

“Customer reconnection on fixed network stands at 77 per cent and continues to improve as power supplies stabilise,” he said.

Minister Vaz said Digicel continues to advance its post- hurricane network restoration, with 904 of the 925 mobile sites online as at February 10, representing approximately 98 per cent network restoration. Customer connectivity levels was at 99 per cent.

“Rebuilding works are also progressing with 37 sites already completed and an additional five scheduled for completion by the end of March,” he indicated.
