Dr Tomlin Paul, deputy principal at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, and a physician, has died.
A notice issued by his family on Monday said Paul “passed peacefully at home”.
His family described him as “a devoted physician, educator, and mentor whose life was defined by service to others”.
“For decades, Dr Paul gave generously of his time, knowledge, and compassion. He was widely admired not only for his professional excellence but also for his kindness, humility, and genuine concern for the people he served.
“He will be remembered as a remarkable doctor, an inspiring teacher, and a deeply loved member of the community,” the notice said.
He joined UWI Mona as a lecturer in 1990 and later served as senior lecturer in community health, director of the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme, deputy dean, and dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences from 2017 to 2021. He began his term as deputy principal at the Mona Campus on August 1, 2023.
Paul later held senior academic roles at the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda, where he served as chair of the Educational Development and Quality Centre and dean of Research, Innovation and Quality.
Widely recognised for his contributions to medical education and public health, he received the World Organisation of National Colleges and Academies’ Five-Star Doctor Award and was a strong advocate for student engagement, continuous quality improvement, and social accountability in health professions education.
During his tenure as dean, the faculty received the ASPIRE-to-Excellence Award in Medical Education for Social Accountability from the Association for Medical Education in Europe, and his office earned the UWI Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence for the 2020/2021 academic year.
Paul authored or co-authored more than 50 publications, including a book and several book chapters, and collaborated with regional educational institutions, quality assurance bodies, and the Pan American Health Organisation.
