Forty-three years ago, John and Catherine MacArthur started a foundation, a fellowship program, with the goal of identifying between 20 to 30 individuals working in any field who have shown extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuant and marked capacity for self-direction.
The award seeks to enable people with a track record and the potential to produce additional extraordinary work, said Marlies Carruth, director of the MacArthur Fellows Program.
This year 2024, the 22 recipients each receive what is often called a ‘genius grant’, a stipend of US$800,000 dispersed over five years for the recipient to utilise in whatever way they choose.
This year, Jamaica’s own Ebony G. Patterson, multimedia artist, is one of those ‘genius’ recipients. Congrats!
