As ex-MP Jolyan Silvera spent the night in police custody, Peter Champagnie was on hand to safeguard his client’s rights amid the ongoing murder investigation into the death of mother-of-four Melissa Silvera.
The criminal defence attorney, speaking to journalists outside the Major Investigation Division (MID) on Thursday evening (January 18), mused that it would “very irresponsible” to disclose details but indicated that Silvera would be “with the police” until today.
“As I said, investigations continue. It would be foolhardy of me to comment beyond that. There will be, as I said, other aspects of the investigation to be pursued and, beyond that, I have no comment,” he told gathered media.
“He will be with the police until tomorrow (Friday) and we will see what happens from there. I don’t think it would be prudent or appropriate to comment beyond what I have said here. I have to respect the [legal] process as an attorney [and] in terms of my own client’s position,” added Champagnie.

Silvera, an ex-Parliamentarian who formerly represented the People’s National Party (PNP), was taken into custody after questioning yesterday.
The one-term Member of Parliament for Western St Mary is being considered a suspect in the death of his wife, Melissa, who died last November in St Andrew.
Melissa Silvera was laid to rest last Friday at a ceremony on the grounds of the St Andrew Parish Church in Half-Way Tree.
