On Sunday of this week, the island experienced heavy rainfall that badly affected western parishes.

The downpour of rain has left Montego Bay and sections of St James in particular, flooded. As of yesterday, roads were reportedly obstructed and homes were flooded, forcing residents to abandon their homes.

Communities including Union Hall, Albion, Green Pond and Cornwall Courts are some other areas that were badly affected by the raging waters.

The heavy rainfall resulted in the sewage system flowing into the homes of residents in the Cornwall Courts Community. According to Janel Ricketts, community relations officer for the Western Region of the National Works Agency (NWA), fallen debris and fallen trees have affected sections of the Barnett to Adelphi roadway as well as the Montego Bay to Great River main road, in the vicinity of the Unity Hall community.

Schools set to reopen for face-to-face classes on Monday morning had to remain closed and several people were forced to stay away from work.

Traffic to the Sangster’s International Airport was also badly affected, causing the traffic to slow to a crawl.

It is reported that the NWA has been conducting a necessary assessment of the damage to ensure suitable remedial action.
