The West Indies defeated Scotland by 35 runs at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata, India, on Saturday.
West Indies made 192-5 and dismissed Scotland for 147 in the 19th over and jumped to the top of Group C with two points. England, Italy and Nepal are the other teams in the group but are yet to play.
Scotland won the toss and asked the West Indies to bat and they piled up 182-5 from their 20 overs with Man-of-the-match Shimron Hetmeyer stroking 64 runs from 36 balls, hitting 6x6s and 2x4s.
Hetmeyer was ably supported by opener Brandon King who made 35, Sherfane Rutherford with 26 and Rovman Powell with 24 runs.
Bowling for Scotland, Bradley Currie took 2-23, Oliver Davidson 1-23 and Michael Leask 1-42.
Scotland started poorly, losing three wickets in the Powerplay and were always on the backfoot but Richie Berrington steadied the innings with 42 inclusive of 3x4s and 2x6s. Tom Bruce also batted well, dragging them back into the contest, hitting 35 and putting on 53 runs with Berrington.
But once Berrington went, the inning basically folded and they struggled to reach the target, falling behind the required runs with every over and crumpled 35 runs short for 147.
Romario Shepherd was the star with the ball for the West Indies, capturing 5-20 from three overs and was supported by Jason Holder 3-30. Shamar Joseph and Gudakesh Motie took one wicket each.
The West Indies will next face Nepal on Sunday.
