With the announcement that streaming news platform CNN+ will be shutting down after just a month having gone live, a number of its top on-air talent will be displaced.

Kasie Hunt, a fixture on MSNBC left that cozy family environment where she was well respected to take on a bigger role at CNN’s new venture.

It was an ambitious move for a good reporter who probably saw streaming as the new frontier for American news.

With a new baby, and already putting in a number of years, it was time to broaden her career and meet new challenges.

Hunt was on Morning Joe, having to acquiesce to Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, the stars of that show. Then, she lead Kasie/DC, a Washington political show that aired on Sunday nights before being moved to Way Too Early with Kasie Hunt all within a few years.

She is undoubtedly good at her craft and has an amenable non-partisan disposition which endears her to viewers more so in this febrile culture wars cauldron. She’s technically a better broadcaster than Joy Reid who leads the line on MSNBC’s primetime evening show. Hunt can always be relied upon to do a good job of election coverage.

The word is she is now on a salary of US$1 million at CNN+ and that is a big jump on what she was taking home at MSNBC. But she was at a media house she found comfortable with colleagues she got on with and an audience that held her in high regard. Her bosses there gave her an approving nod.

At CNN, she has to run the gauntlet of new bosses with new ideas and their own favourites.

Does David Zaslav, the new head honcho of Discovery Warner fancy her? Does he see Kasie Hunt as a must-have asset who can revive CNN’s viewership?

She could help to bring in a new swathe of viewers looking for straight-up news with no spin.

Today media ventures are expected to deliver success instantaneously but it does take time to win and keep an audience. CNN+’s detractors are taking glee and gloating after the decision was taken to pull the plug. Bill O’Reilly, Greg Gutfeld, Megyn Kelly, Meghan McCain have all been piling on and have been vituperous on the demise of CNN+ and its on-air talent.

President Trump has been particularly cutting writing: “Congratulations to CNN+ on their decision to immediately FOLD for a lack of ratings, or viewers in any way, shape, or form.”

“It was like an empty desert out there despite spending hundreds of millions of dollars and the hiring of low-rated Chris Wallace, a man who tried so hard to be his father, Mike, but lacked the talent and whatever else is necessary to be a star. In any event, it’s just one more piece of CNN and Fake News that we don’t have to bother with anymore!”

Will Kasie Hunt be scarred by CNN+’s demise? No. Her talent needs an appreciative home and that may very well be MSNBC. She may opt to remain with CNN, comforted by a bigger salary and her own show backed with bountiful resources. Sometimes going to greener pastures doesn’t work out – all that glitters is not gold.

Harry Kane is a legend at Tottenham Hotspur, banging in goals year in, year out, and is beloved by the club’s fans.

One day, there may very well be a statute of him outside the stadium, acknowledging him as the best striker in the club’s history with some 265 goals. Will this be the case at Manchester City or Manchester United? The moment he hits a dry patch will he be warming the bench for the best part of a season, watching younger strikers take the glory that was once his?

Kasie Hunt is part of a new generation of good young news broadcasters such as Kaitlan Collins, Hallie Jackson, Kate Bolduan and Katy Tur who may very well go on to have long rewarding careers like Chris Jansing, Andrea Mitchell and Christiane Amanpour. Hunt must find the right organisation where her talents and self-deprecating style are appreciated and valued.

In a world of evident partisan politics and broadcasters who champion causes, Kasie Hunt is refreshing, versatile with an everyman approach that allows one to consider both sides of the story.

Alex Wagner has returned to MSNBC and by all accounts is doing a fine job. Why not Kasie Hunt?

Still only 36, with a decade behind her as a broadcaster with a major network, she has a bright future

Streaming services are seen as the way forward, the new frontier of television and all players are stampeding in that direction. It’s not so much about the platform but rather the talent.

Who is it that keeps you watching?

Perhaps Kasie can.
