Opposition Spokesperson on Trade, Industry and Global Logistics Anthony Hylton

The People’s National Party (PNP) Opposition Spokesman on Investment, Trade and Global Logistics, Anthony Hylton MP, joins Jamaicans at home and abroad in commemorating World Creativity and Innovation Day on April 21, 2026.

As a proud Small Island Developing State, Jamaica stands at a critical crossroads where data, technology and creativity must be harnessed to secure our nation’s future. The PNP fully supports the global call for stronger data discipline and governance as essential pillars for Jamaica’s meaningful participation in emerging artificial intelligence (AI) governance frameworks. Without robust systems to protect privacy, ensure data quality, and guarantee transparency and accountability, Jamaica risks being left on the margins of a rapidly evolving digital economy.

We therefore reaffirm our commitment to advocating for a comprehensive national data governance framework rooted in human rights, equity and inclusion. Such a framework must: protect citizens’ personal information; promote ethical use of data and AI; ensure public oversight of automated decision-making; and encourage innovation within clear, predictable rules.

Mr Hylton calls on the Government urgently to:

  1. Modernise Jamaica’s and digital infrastructure laws.
  2. Build local capacity in data science, AI ethics and digital policy, particularly among young people.
  3. Actively engage in regional and global AI governance forums to safeguard Jamaica’s interests.

On this World Creativity and Innovation Day, the PNP underscores that disciplined, ethical data governance is not a barrier to innovation. It is the foundation for a just, progressive and resilient digital Jamaica.
