The Board of Kintyre Holdings has taken issue with a report by Neville Graham in the Gleaner that VM Investments obtained a judgement against iCreate.
In a letter sent to Gleaner chief editor Moya Thomas, Wilson’s lawyer asserts: “We are writing to reiterate our formal demand for a full, prominent public apology and a complete, unequivocal retraction of the original erroneous headline.
“The original headline asserted in definite terms that VM Investments Limited obtained a judgement against iCreate. This is unequivocally false. No such judgement was obtained, and the definitive statement in the headline constitutes defamation.
“As you are aware, the headline of any published article is the primary source of information consumed by the public. The immediate consequences of this misleading headline have been severe, causing reputational damage, quantifiable market uncertainty and undue distress for our client.”
Our Today understands that for days, Wilson’s representatives have entreated the Gleaner to make the necessary corrections, but to no avail. That has led them to consider legal action if the Gleaner continues to remain obstinate on this matter.
A board member said: “This is a listed company and such misinformation can cause irreparable harm. What are shareholders and potential investors expected to think? Reporters are duty-bound to report the facts, not what they would like to be the story. Editors must meticulously ensure that reporters get it right, and most hold them to account. Too many editors in Jamaica are negligent and don’t take their responsibilities seriously. No wonder legacy media is on its way out.
“We brought the matter to the Gleaner’s attention, and we were blithely ignored. What are we supposed to do? We have to protect our reputation. The Gleaner has 48 hours to make this right before all available legal remedies are explored.”
The Gleaner has now changed the vexing headline, and the matter should now be over.
