US President Donald Trump continues to score big wins against the media and big tech companies.
Popular platform YouTube has agreed to a $24.5 million settlement over its decision to suspend Trump’s account after the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots.
Big tech platforms Meta and X have had to settle with the president after suspending his accounts. The President has also filed lawsuits against ABC, CBS and Rupert Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal.
As part of the settlement, YouTube will make no admission of wrongdoing, and will donate $22 million to the Trust for the National Mall, $200 million to the White House Ball project and $2.5 million to the co-plaintiffs.
YouTube did not want to engage in a long, drawn-out legal battle with a sitting president of the United States. American media companies and big tech operators have acquiesced in the face of Trump’s wrath and are now striking a conciliatory tone.
Trump wrote on Truth Social: “This massive victory proves Big Tech censorship has consequences.”
YouTube wrote that it ”values conservative voices on its platform and recognises that these creators have extensive reach and play an important role in civic discourse”.
