The 2024 Saint International Avant-Garde Show held at the AC Hotel on Saturday, June 1, showcased innovative designs from Jamaican designers.
The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the competition winner, Karlene ‘Nina’ Levy.
Her innovative crochet piece from ‘Amedyss by Nina’, captivated both the judges and the audience with its blend of bold, futuristic designs and intricate craftsmanship.
Saint International CEO Deiwght Peters, in a previous interview with Our Today, noted that: “This year, over 20 designers have registered their interest in being part of the contest. The inspiration for 2024’s edition is Independence 1962. This year, Fashion Face of the Caribbean will be the most competitive event in Jamaica’s modelling history. “
Levy’s work stood out for its imaginative use of materials, sticking to the theme, and stunning visual storytelling, stamping her as a rising star in the fashion industry.

Levy’s collection was a masterclass in avant-garde fashion.
“I sow, but I’m not a big fan of sowing, and this is what I am good at—so I love looking at the thread and deciding where I go with it and what it’s going to produce,” Levy said.
Drawing inspiration from both dancehall and ultra-modern imaginative elements, she seamlessly merged crochet and high fashion, creating a standout, winning piece.
“The theme was inspired by reggae/dancehall, so it was more of a dancehall/reggae futuristic vibe,” she added.

When asked how she felt about winning the Saint International Avant-Garde 2024 competition with an attached prize of JMD 124 thousand, Levy said: “It feels good because I’ve been doing it for a few years, and this is my first win, and it’s kind of exciting… All of these great designers, they all created these great pieces. So when they win, I’m [also] happy for them,”
“Winning this competition is a dream come true,” said Levy, beaming with pride. “I wanted to create something that challenged traditional fashion norms and pushed the boundaries of what is considered wearable art. I’m incredibly grateful for this recognition and excited about what the future holds.”

The show featured an impressive lineup of national designers, each presenting collections that ranged from the whimsical to the thought-provoking.
In addition to the fashion showcases, the event included performances by local musicians D’ Angel, Tifa, and upcoming artiste J Calm adding a vibrant cultural tone to the evening.
The 2024 Saint International Avant Garde Show left many of the new faces and talents etched in the minds of attendees. With Karlene ‘Nina’ Levy leading the charge of Jamaicans in fashion and modelling, the future of avant-garde fashion looks more exciting than ever.
