The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) says its restoration efforts across the island now stand at 67 per cent on Sunday (July 7), accounting for roughly 463,000 customers since the passage of Hurricane Beryl.

In a social media update, the sole electricity provider advised that in the last 72 hours, technicians completed a comprehensive assessment of power plants nationwide. Furthermore, 85 per cent of JPS transmission lines have since been inspected with over 13,000 kilometres of distribution lines patrolled.

To date, 219,000 customers have been reconnected to the JPS grid.

Large sections of hardest-hit parishes St Elizabeth, Manchester and Westmoreland remained without power since Hurricane Beryl barrelled just south of the island last Wednesday, the scale of damage continues to hamper restoration efforts in those southern parishes. The situation is particularly dire for the breadbasket parish, where most of JPS’ infrastructure was severely damaged by the hurricane eyewall.

In the meantime, JPS says its team of technicians will resume the re-electrification process in 10 parishes today.
