Member of Parliament (MP) for Westmoreland Central George Wright, has been readmitted into the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).
While speaking at a JLP meeting on Sunday, February 16 Wright stated that he is back in the fold.
“I was out there in the pavilion; I’m back in the team,” the Jamaica Gleaner quoted him saying.
The party indicated in a statement that Wright has applied to the JLP to have his membership reinstated.
“The Membership Committee reviewed his application and considered the circumstances that led to his independent status, along with the mitigating actions he has since taken to be readmitted to the Jamaica Labour Party,” the statement said.
Subsequently, the Membership Committee recommended that he be readmitted, which was accepted by the Standing Committee.
Wright was elected MP for Westmoreland Central in September 2020 for the JLP, but the controversial leader resigned in June 2021 amidst a domestic violence scandal. A video surfaced in April that year showing a man throwing punches and beating a woman with a stool.
However, Wright never denied or confirmed that he was the one in the video.
On April 6, 2021, he and his then-partner filed separate police reports about a physical altercation that took place.
The case was closed as the two complainants didn’t pursue the case.
