The West Indies lost the first 50-over ODI by seven runs to New Zealand on Sunday and trail the three-match series 0-1.

The West Indies won the toss and asked New Zealand to bat at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch on a reported difficult batting pitch.

The home team rattled up 269-7 from their 50 overs with Daryl Mitchell striking 119 from 118 balls, inclusive of 12 4s and two 6s and was named Player of the Match.

Mitchell was ably supported by opener Devon Conway, with 49 runs from 58 balls, inclusive of seven 4s and one six. Michael Bracewell, batting at number six, hit 35 runs.

Jayden Seales grabbed 3-41 from nine overs, Matthew Forde took 2-55, and Roston Chase 1-37.

The West Indies were asked to make 270 to win and they fell short by seven runs, reaching 262-6 from 50 overs.

Jamaican John Campbell fell for four runs at 10-1 before Sherfane Rutherford top scored with 55 from 61 balls with three 4s and three 6s, and along with Shai Hope’s 37, gave the West Indies some hope.

Opener Alick Athanaze made 29 from 58 balls and Keacy Carty hit 32. But a late unbeaten partnership of 53 runs by Justin Greaves, stroked 38 from 24 balls, and Romario Shepherd 26 off 19 balls, brought the West Indies close to the target.

Bowling for New Zealand, Kyle Jamieson captured 3-52, Zakary Foulkes got 1-30, and Mitchell Santer took 1-46 as New Zealand took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.

The second ODI match will be on Tuesday, November 18, and the third game will be on Friday, November 21.
