Following their massive upset win over Puerto Rico, Jamaica enter the second Group B game of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Americas Qualifiers on Monday night confident of securing two more valuable points.

Jamaica and Canada lead Group B with two points each following wins over Puerto Rico and The Bahamas last Friday.

Jamaica narrowly defeated Puerto Rico 92-90 with a buzzer-beater from Kofi Cockburn, while Canada easily dispatched The Bahamas 111-75.

It was a massive win for Jamaica (ranked 95th in the world) over a Puerto Rico team that is ranked 16th best in the world. Both teams were without their NBA players and will be without them for tonight’s game, which starts at 7:10.

Jamaica will miss Norman Powell of the Miami Heat, and Puerto Rico will be without Jose Alvardo of the New Orleans Pelicans and Julian Strawther of the Denver Nuggets.

The local lads and college players get the chance to shine, and none more so than debutant Kofi Cockburn, who top-scored with 26 points and tipped in the buzzer-beater as Jamaica defeated Puerto Rico for the first time in five games dating back to 2006.

Cockburn, who plays for Japanese club Hiroshima Dragonflies, is a powerful centre, and he will again be Jamaica’s main hope following the impressive performance that saw him pull down 15 rebounds to go with his 26 points.

He should have support from Tyran De Lattibeaudiere, Andrew Thelwell, Kenton Facey, Romaine Thomas and Chase Audige, who all got double-digit scores on Friday.

Christopher Ortiz is expected to be the main man for Puerto Rico, along with Gian Clavell and Zakai Zeigler as they hunt their first point of the qualifiers.

The groups for the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers are:

  • Group A:  United States, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Nicaragua
  • Group B:  Puerto Rico, Canada, Bahamas, Jamaica
  • Group C:  Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Chile
  •  Group D:  Argentina, Uruguay, Panama, Cuba
