American middle-distance star Josh Hoey broke the nearly three-decade-old men’s 800m indoor world record on Saturday at the Boston Indoor Grand Prix.
The 26-year-old crossed the line in a blistering 1:42.5, slicing past Denmark’s Wilson Kipketer’s 1997 mark of 1:42.67 set in Paris. Hoey, who took gold in the same event at the 2025 World Indoor Championships, had been chasing this record for a while, clocking 1:43.24 in New York last year, the second fastest time in history at that point.
Hoey credited his victory to keeping calm and letting his brother, Jaxson, who paced the race, guide him to the record. After narrowly missing out on the US teams for both the 2024 Olympics and last year’s World Championships in Tokyo, this moment was a long-awaited triumph.
Poland’s Filip Ostrowski finished second with a personal best of 1:44.68, while Dutchman Ryan Clarke took third, setting a new national record at 1:44.72.
The meet also featured a sprint highlight as Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith, 30, stormed to victory in the women’s 60m with a time of 7.08 seconds, beating Jamaica’s professional debutante Brianna Lyston and Trinidad and Tobago’s Leah Bertrand.
