This EPL title race looks like it is going down to the wire.
Newcastle, despite its poor recent performances are capable of staging an upset so Arsenal had to be cautious today. A loss today and Arsenal’s chances of winning the league would have been dented.
Eberechi Eye got things off to a good start with a well-taken goal in the ninth minute. From there on, Arsenal clung on with a team performance of defiance.
Arsenal have been phenomenal with set pieces this season, and it comes as a surprise that Newcastle wasn’t further punished via that route.
With Manchester City despatching Southampton 2-1 in the F.A.Cup semi-final today, Arsenal must hold its nerve.
Recent lapses have placed Arsenal in its predicament, which sees it having to battle hard to win its first league trophy in 20 years.
It would be disconcerting if Arsenal were to be runners-up for the fourth consecutive year.
Arsenal can take heart from this win against Newcastle and have as a result have gone back to the top of the table with 73 points.
At the other end of the table, Spurs secured its first win this year, taking down relegated Wolves 1-0. It still leaves the North Londoners mired in a relegation dog fight with West Ham getting a late winner to beat Everton 2-1 and sit two points above Spurs with 36 points.
Spurs new coach, the Italian Roberto De Zerbi has said his team can win all five of their remaining fixtures. He has chalked off one-four more to go. Spurs will need 8 more points to secure safety.
West Ham will not be doing Spurs any favours and look more battle hardened.
Many think Arsenal lack the resolve to get over the line this season but that may be a bit premature. In February of this year, Arsenal was a shoo-in to win the EPL trophy but recent slip-ups have seen its 12-point lead evaporate.
This is a good side, and Mikel Arteta’s men will have to demonstrate that they have what it takes to be crowned “ Champions”.
