‘A consummate diplomat’ – Golding, Johnson Smith join flow of tributes after death of Bernal

Opposition Leader Mark Golding has joined the chorus of individuals mourning the death of diplomat and economist Ambassador Richard Bernal.

Golding, commenting on Bernal’s death on social media, said: “It is with great shock and sadness that I have learned of the untimely passing of Ambassador Dr the Hon Richard L. Bernal, OJ. A towering public servant, he was both a consummate diplomat and an important advisor to the Government of Jamaica over many years.”

Golding added: “Dr Bernal excelled to the highest international standards, and Jamaica owes him a debt of gratitude for his immense contribution and service. My deepest condolences to his wife Margaret, his children and the entire family. May he Rest In Peace.”

Bernal died this evening (January 4 ) after collapsing from a suspected heart attack while exercising.

Also adding her sympathies on learning of his death was Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, minister of foreign affairs and foreign trade, who said: ” On behalf of the @mfaftja (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade), I extend my deepest condolences to the family and large coterie of colleagues, admirers and friends of Amb the Hon. Richard Bernal who sadly passed suddenly today.  He was a true gentleman and always generous w/ his perspectives on FA and trade matters.”

Also commenting on Bernal’s passing was CARICOM Secretary General Dr Carla Barnett.

“I am shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Dr Richard Bernal who was instrumental in promoting and advancing the Community’s trade and economic interests. Condolences to his family,” she said.
