Arnett Gardens ended a three-game winless streak by comprehensively beating champions Cavalier 3-0 while Tivoli Gardens and Portmore United battled to a 2-2 draw in the two Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League games on Monday.
Playing at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, home team Arnett Gardens destroyed Cavalier as Rushike Kelson opened the scoring in the 43rd minute before skipper Fabian Reid doubled the advantage in minute 78.
Substitute D’Sean Henry, who represented Hydel High in the Manning Cup, put the icing on the cake, scoring Arnett’s third goal in the 83rd minute.
Arnett’s fifth win from 13 games and they jumped five places to seventh on 16 points. The “Junglists” are now three points adrift of the last playoff spot but have a game in hand.
Cavalier, which was losing its sixth game of the season from 14 matches, is in fifth spot with 22 points, comfortably holding down a playoff spot.
The champions have now lost three of their last five games, but their inconsistent form must be worrying for head coach Rudolph Speid, who is now the interim coach of the Reggae Boyz.
Meanwhile, at the Edward Seaga Stadium, home to Tivoli Gardens, they scored first but had to depend on a stoppage-time goal for a share of the points in a pulsating 2-2 draw with Portmore United.
Akeil Lechman gave Tivoli Gardens a 15th-minute lead but Portmore struck back courtesy of Clayton Peck in the 34th and Javier brown in the 78th, taking a 2-1 lead and looking like winners.
But Tivoli Gardens were not done and Alton Lewis struck very late in the 90+1 minute for a share of the points in a 2-2 draw.
Tivoli Gardens inched to 19 points while holding onto the last playoff spot in sixth, while Portmore United remained in third spot on 26 points, just three points adrift of the leader Montego Bay United.
