Several athletes have gone missing after competing at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with some failing to return home alongside their national teams.
Police in Scotland confirmed it received reports of athletes being unaccounted for following the conclusion of the Games on Sunday and said inquiries are underway.
Four members of Uganda’s boxing team reportedly did not board their scheduled flight home, while a Pakistani boxer was also absent when officials searched his room before departure.
Reports suggest some athletes may be seeking asylum in Scotland, citing hopes of pursuing better training opportunities and continuing their sporting careers abroad. One of the missing boxers reportedly said the athletes planned to seek asylum in Scotland, hoping to continue their boxing careers in a country they believe offers greater training opportunities and support. He appealed for understanding from people back home, asking that their decision not be judged harshly. Besides that, authorities are working with the Home Office as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the missing athletes.
