Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley was announced on Friday among the 2025 honourees of the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity.
The award aims to recognise individuals and organisations for their indelible contributions to societal issues and for fostering peace and solidarity across different communities, locally and internationally.
Mottley has been selected by the judging committee for her leadership and advocacy efforts in climate change. She launched the Bridgetown Initiative in 2022 in an effort to foster a coalition of partners who will help champion the movement of global change.
“It’s a call to reform the global financial system. This reform would support developing countries as they face climate disasters and increase the financing available to fight climate change,” she noted at the time.
Mottley has committed to achieving 100 per cent renewable energy for Barbados by 2030 to reduce the island’s dependence on fossil fuels by investing in solar, wind and other clean energy sources.
Of note, the fraternity will also award humanitarian organization World Central Kitchen, founded by Chef José Andrés, and 15-year-old health innovator Heman Bekele—the award’s first youth honouree.
The award ceremony, which is the sixth edition, is reportedly slated for Tuesday, February 4 at 7 pm UAE time. It will be held at the Founder’s Memorial in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The award was launched in 2019 following a meeting in Abu Dhabi between Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmed Al-Tayeb, during which they co-signed the Document on Human Fraternity.
The award is named in honour of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founder of the United Arab Emirates, who is renowned for his humanitarianism and dedication to helping people globally.
