Cayman repeals new temporary work permit requirement

A requirement for employers to advertise on JobsCayman before submitting Temporary Work Permit applications has been repealed by Cabinet until further notice.
The new requirement was expected to go into effect on March 31. The move follows several representations from Caymanians and particularly Caymanian-owned small businesses, saying that this would have a significant impact on them.
As a result, the government was taking more time to reassess the situation to ensure that the benefits outweigh the negatives. The repeal was informed by the fact that the Workforce Opportunities & Residency Cayman (WORC) was not yet ready to implement this new requirement.
This new requirement means that more jobs will be posted on the portal; therefore, WORC will be better able to assess the employment industry, as well as forecast what required skills job seekers need in an effort to close gaps that are in particular employment categories
When the requirement was announced last month, acting WORC Interim Director, Jeremy Scott said, “having this data will be vital to building a strong and capable Caymanian workforce. Therefore we encourage all Caymanians seeking employment to register on the JobsCayman portal.”
For the year ending 2022, WORC reviewed and made decisions on 55,000 applications, and of those, 21,040 were approved temporary work permits. For the month of January 2023, 1,830 were approved.
