A joint police operation between the St Catherine North and South Divisions led to the discovery of an illegal slaughterhouse at Big Lane, Central Village, St Catherine on Friday.

During the operation, lawmen discovered over forty stolen goat carcasses and a large number of live animals confined within makeshift pens.

The slaughterhouse, located in an area resembling a dump, was operating in violation of public health regulations.

This discovery underscores the criminal activities of individuals who not only steal livestock, including valuable breeding stock like pregnant goats but also endanger public health by operating unsanitary and potentially disease-ridden slaughterhouses.

“This discovery highlights the ongoing efforts of the police to combat illegal activities and ensure public safety,” stated Acting Assistant Commissioner Christopher Phillips, head of Area 5 Police. “We will continue to be vigilant and proactive in our efforts to apprehend those who engage in such criminal behaviour.”

The public is urged to exercise extreme caution and vigilance regarding the source of the meat they purchase and consume, particularly during the holiday season.

The police say criminals are actively targeting livestock, leaving farmers devastated and impacting food security. We implore the public to purchase from reputable sources.

Eight individuals were arrested in connection with the operation and are facing charges under the Larceny Act and the Public Health Act.

The Commission notes that concerns regarding the integrity of sections of the pipeline were identified prior to the passage of Hurricane Melissa. Subsequent post-event assessments confirmed that approximately 3 kilometres of pipeline infrastructure were significantly impacted, necessitating extensive rehabilitation works. It is worth noting that while the substantial part of Martha Brae- Salt Marsh area has been restored, more time and resources is necessary to restore pockets of the network such as this one.
