Jamaican singer-songwriter Damian ‘D-Major’ Codlin recently got baptised and shared the exciting news with fans through a TikTok video.
In the video posted Monday, December 9, Major shared that getting baptised was a natural step for him to take.
“[It was] the best decision of my life,” said Major. “Every member of the human family has that to do… only one person can fill that void…only God.”
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, D-Major grew up in a middle-class household raised by his single mother. Her collection of R&B and reggae vinyl influenced his early love for music, while a chance meeting with reggae legend King Yellowman ignited his ambition to pursue a music career.
Transitioning to a solo career in 2005, he adopted his stage name to reflect positivity, noting, “Major is a musical term, and it is more uplifting than Minor.” His debut single, Tell Me Who, produced by Ernie Wilks, introduced an eclectic blend of lover rock, reggae, R&B, and soul to the world.
Over the years, D-Major has delivered numerous hits, including Speak the Truth, Can’t Get Enough, and Girl of My Dreams, That’s What Love’s About. His collaborations with Jamaican music heavyweights such as Christopher Martin, Agent Sasco, Busy Signal, and Richie Loops cemented his reputation as a contender in the reggae space.
Since the announcement, Major has not disclosed if this step would change the genre of music he does going forward; he did, however, say getting baptised was something he “had to do.”
