Jamaican-Canadian heavyweight boxer Donovan ‘Razor’ Ruddock who took on Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis is still going strong and is now focused on building sporting facilities for the community he was born in Red Ground, St Catherine.

He is planning on hosting a series of exhibition bouts in Jamaica next year, with the aim to later stage four major international fights a year there.

Known for his powerful left hand (The Smash) he had 47 professional fights of which he won 40, 30 of those by knockout.

He was a major competitor during the golden era of the 90s.

Recently in Jamaica, he sat down for an interview with Our Today where he picked out his top 5 heavyweights:

  1. Muhammad Ali
  2. Joe Lewis
  3. Rocky Marciano
  4. Mike Tyson
  5. Mike Weaver

“In the modern generation, I like Canelo Alvarez. He is a fantastic boxer, powerful and keeps coming forward. He is one tough kid,” Ruddock told Our Today.

“Shakur Stevenson, the junior lightweight out of New Jersey, is exciting and will be huge in the world of boxing. He’s baaaad!

“What I notice when watching the boxers of today is they all seem to have one pace,” Razor added.

So what lessons can you take from boxing and apply to life?

Ruddock quickly responded: “Be persistent. Stick at what you have committed to even when things get tough. To get good at anything, you have to do the fundamentals over and over again. You’ve seen that movie Karate Kid, ‘wax on, wax off’, that’s what I’m talking about. You have to spend hours training, running and hitting the heavy bag. Whatever you do, you must prepare for success.”
