Karl Samuda, Minister of Labour and Social Security, says that the Employment Agencies Regulations Act 1957 will be amended to give effect to the standards established by the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), thereby ensuring employment protection for seafarers.
This, he shared during his presentation in the 2023 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives today (April 26).
“The Employment Agencies Regulations Act of 1957 is another matter. In 2014, Jamaica ratified the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006 which establishes the basic rights of seafarers to decent work and the standards that are to be adhered to in their recruitment and employment. It’s an area of great concern and we have to get that piece of legislation through,” he said.
